Learning from Deaf Actors

From Irene Lewis, Center Stage: “We have had an extended relationship with Willy Conley (Deaf actor and playwright) because he is a Pew Fellow for us and an artistic associate. Willy has had great patience with all of here at Center Stage in trying to teach us about the world of Deafness and Deaf culture. When I approach Willy about being in a show, he reads the scripts and then submits ideas about how best to use a Deaf actor in it. For our audience’s first experience, he felt it important that the choice be logical. His insight and ideas about this were revelatory.”
